Globalization and Resilience

Event: Annual Conference - DRI2023

Author: Colleen Herrmann

Globalization is defined as the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale. The 21st century was heralded as “The Global Century” with the widespread use of the internet opening up both international markets and supply capabilities that previously seemed impossible. As a result of technological achievements and economic integration, the world has become more interconnected than ever before. Businesses began entering these global markets and developing a just in time” supply chain that took advantage of the lowest prices from single vendors, often importing different parts from multiple locations around the globe to make one finished product. But globalization also brought challenges. Just in time manufacturing opened a risk to sales if just one element of the supply chain failed. The increased transport of parts and finished goods added to the greenhouse gasses causing climate change. The gap between developed and underdeveloped nations grew. The ease of air travel expedited the spread of COVID 19, quickly causing a global pandemic that shuttered the world. Globalized companies quickly felt the impact and “supply chain issues” became part of the daily vernacular of their customers. How do globalization and resilience come together to be convergent forces? Can companies manage cost, efficiency and resilience in a global world?

Is Your Business Ready for a Pandemic from the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Event: Annual Conference - DRI2020

Author: Dr. Lisa M. Koonin

A pandemic occurs when there is the emergence of a new virus that spreads rapidly between people all over the world, causing illness and death. Pandemics can have a significant impact on businesses, producing high levels of worker absenteeism and disruption of business functions. Although the emerging outbreak of the novel corona virus has not yet been declared as a pandemic as of February 2020, cases are mounting and disruptive global impact on supply chains is increasing. Currently few businesses have incorporated specific plans for a pandemic in their business continuity plans, leaving them vulnerable when a pandemic strikes. This highly interactive workshop will be conducted using a “table-top” exercise format. Information will be provided about pandemics and their potential impacts on businesses. Practical steps that businesses can take to protect their business, workforce, and customers will be discussed, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss these strategies in an interactive tabletop exercise. By the end of the session, participants will have essential information to begin to incorporate pandemic planning in their business continuity plans.

Why The Business Impact Of The Coronavirus Will Linger—And What To Do About It – Chloe Demrovsky for Forbes

Event: DRI Case Study/Position Paper

Author: Chloe Demrovsky

“Why are markets so spooked? The economic concerns are not so much about the virus itself. They are about the prolonged impact of supply shortages paired with wavering consumer confidence and reduced spending due to response measures. With case numbers growing in Italy, supply chain fears increase. The spread of Covid-19 and attempts to contain it are now affecting European industrial hubs as well manufacturing in China, South Korea and Japan, which could cause prolonged shortages across a variety of sectors. As for the U.S., it’s a matter of when, not if. Are we prepared?” DRI President and CEO Chloe Demrovsky addresses the resilience community and its pandemic preparedness status for Forbes.
