Members of DRI's Future Vision Committee present the major findings from the 2024 DRI Trends Report and the 2025 DRI Predictions Report. Lyndon Bird provides an overview of the reports' findings, while key issues are discussed by individual members: - Eric McNulty focuses on the the current global risk situation and how priorities might change in the near and medium term. The change in U.S. administration is likely to modify many aspects of U.S. policy (domestically and globally). The presenter will assess how this may affect resilience management issues such as climate change, ESG, and global supply chains. - Richard Knowlton discusses why once again "cyber events” have topped our list of importance in terms of threats to resilience. He will provide an overview of how he sees the main cyber threats and how well governments and companies are in dealing with them. - Steven Lei explains that natural disasters are a constant theme in our resilience surveys. He will cover the lessons learned in the LA fires, together with a wider perspective about what needs to done to better protect citizens and companies from increasing temperature extremes and other climate changes.

Scientific analysis of past and current knowledge will give some indication of what might happen in the future, but it is no guarantee of specific outcomes. Met with this challenge annually, the DRI International Future Vision Committee (FVC) considers myriad potential outcomes from a vast number of everchanging variables. For those who enjoy the excitement and challenge of rapidly adapting to new circumstances, 2025 will be your year. Those wishing for a period of calm likely will be disappointed.

In 2023, we celebrated our 35th year serving this exciting profession of service. Because milestones are always a time for reflection, we’d like to dedicate this edition of our annual review to look back at some of the accomplishments of this venerable institution not just from this year but also to provide a review of all the various ways in which we support you every year.

The FVC consists of international thought leaders and experts in all aspects of resilience management. The key input is the annual survey of certified resilience professionals which provides much of the base data for the conclusions,

DRI International has joined with Harvard’s National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) to develop a new report, “Covid-19: An Analysis of Leadership Styles and Outcomes.” This research uses the coronavirus pandemic to inform future preparedness and response efforts. Researchers interviewed executives from a variety of industries to gain understanding of their “meta-leadership” capabilities, a holistic view of the challenges leaders take when managing complex crisis situations.

2020 was a difficult year for everyone and the crisis is far from over. I want to acknowledge the ongoing challenge presented by Covid-19 and share what DRI is doing to continue assisting you. Since 2015, the DRI International Future Vision Committee (FVC) has produced an annual set of predictions. These predictions are drawn from a wide range of subject areas, including political, economic, and social issues as well as environmental and technological developments.

The DRI International Career Survey was intended to assess how the role of the resilience professional is changing. We wanted to know how resilience professionals feel about their roles, where they sit within organizations, and how they interact with related disciplines. What we found reaffirmed our belief that there is still considerable confusion about the exact makeup of a resilience professional and even resilience management itself, despite broader acceptance of the common goal of improved organizational resilience.

In recognizing the critical importance of effective communications within the resilience community, DRI created a committee to develop a new reference document that combines the most common business continuity and resilience terms and definitions into a single guide. Most terms were relatively straightforward in their definition, and others required more discussion and analysis by the committee. The analysis of one term, incident, became a long-term discussion, with no consensus reached. The Glossary Committee presents this white paper on defining incident to showcase the continuing effort for effective communications in our community.

One way of promoting our relevance to the wider business community is to look at what might happen and evaluate how well we can deal with it to minimize impact. Most professionals will have developed tests and exercises based on scenarios – these give realism, focus, and interest to our resilience programs. Predictions are really an extension of that – a look at the wider world and how such trends and possible events might threaten our ability to respond.

Organizations today are confronted by a wide range of cyberattacks, so it comes as no surprise that cyberattacks and data breaches have consistently ranked high on the list of key issues identified for the resilience community according to the DRI International Global Risk and Resilience Trends Reports, issued annually by DRI’s Future Vision Committee. This year’s report revealed that although the top issues remain the same, there appears to be an even greater focus on technological risk. Given the development of technologies and the growth of business data, this is likely to remain the case moving forward … which may provide new opportunities for hackers to cause such massive disruptions.

The DRI International Global Risk and Resilience Trends Report provides a global perspective and comprehensive trends analysis of how resilience professionals view their industry and the external factors that are shaping it. It provides insight into the key trends and changes that have been observed since the last report, and has been extended this year to give an even more detailed picture of the state of the profession.

It’s never easy to predict the future. With the pace of change rapidly increasing, accurate predictions are ever more difficult to make solely based upon extrapolation of past events. In this report, we have tried to make reasonable predictions given our current knowledge, and the DRI Future Vision Committee has limited its predictions to those issues most likely to impact resilience professionals.

Published each November, the DRI International Global Risk and Resilience Trends Report is essential reading for resilience professionals. It provides a summary of key trends that emerged over the course of the year as well as insight into the current state of the profession.

Based on the results of over 1,000 respondents to a survey conducted by the Women in Business Continuity Management Committee, this white paper examines the experiences of women in the BCM field, as well as professional expectations and challenges as the profession moves into the future.

This white paper is designed as a tool for integrating organizational approaches to business continuity management and disaster risk reduction, a roadmap for implementing the Sendai framework into their existing resilience program.

This white paper, developed based on a presentation at the U.N. World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, discusses the need for partnerships between the public and private sectors and how to work together to plan for a disaster event, using the 2011 earthquake in Japan as a recent example.
